Fragmentations of Unity

Fragmentations of Unity is a swarm robotic light installation that asks what it means to be social, and to be one. Twenty-nine translucent tubes hang overhead, each housing a rotation mechanism, RGB LEDs and a thermal sensor. Each unit is minimal, and each is oriented: it has a defined front and back, at once a vector and a will.

The work begins from a simple idea drawn from the evolutionary history of life. When organisms first acquired a digestive tract — becoming tubes that ingest and excrete — orientation was born. We treat this condition of being-oriented as a primitive of trans-species communication: a stripped-down ancestor of the attention that living things give one another. The tubes sense and respond, turning toward whoever moves closest, breathing in unison, drifting apart, shifting tempo and colour. The encounter unfolds at the scale of the body: to enter is to be noticed; to move is to be answered. The work is not viewed but entered.

Six real-time choreographies, each with its own algorithm and four-channel sound, give the swarm a vocabulary for the tension between the individual and the collective. Heaven and Earth stages one against the many; Fireflies uses a Kuramoto coupled-oscillator model to move between synchrony and asynchrony; The Two of Us follows the beginning and parting of a dialogue between two units; Facing searches for the visitor's body heat; Fish drifts as a crowd; Rotating Ceiling turns the flock into faces of the sky.

Rather than the flawless mass-game choreography common to large light installations, the work foregrounds the liveliness born of kinematics and the closeness of intimate distance. The behaviour of the tubes is minimal and never spelled out. At times they engage the visitor who comes near; at times they engage one another — turning toward or away, changing tempo, falling in and out of step. In these exchanges visitors read relationship — compatibility and hesitation, affection and conflict, the elation of belonging to a crowd, or conversely the pressure to conform and the feeling of being left alone — interpreting them through their own memories and experience. It is a microcosm of attention and recognition — a non-verbal dialogue on being social, and being alive — lived from inside.
