Mechanical Voices

Riches is considered a pioneer of machine-based art. As part of the concert evening “Martin Riches - Mechanical Voices”, four composers and musicians Audrey Chen, Max Eilbacher, Masahiro Miwa and Ute Wassermann present their works on newly adapted machines by the sound artist for the first time. Accompanied by a short documentary and a discussion, the programme sheds light on the connections between art, archiving and technical mediation using the example of Martin Riches’ works.

For over five decades, Martin Riches has been exploring the intersections between mechanics, sound and language, creating complex kinetic spatial installations. His works – including “The Singing Machine”, “The Talking Machine” and “Four Voices” – mimic human voices and articulation with astounding precision. His devices seem to become independent players, questioning the relationship between humans, machines and artistic autonomy.

In collaboration with media artist So Kanno, the two artists developed strategies to preserve and further develop Riche’s instruments using new technologies, making the machines accessible for contemporary experimental or electronic musicians.

マーティン・リッチズは発音機械のアート作品のパイオニアとして知られています。コンサートイベント「マーティン・リッチズ — メカニカル・ヴォイシズ」では、4人の作曲家・音楽家であるオードリー・チェン、マックス・アイルバッハー、三輪眞弘、ウテ・ヴァッサーマンが、このサウンドアーティストのために新たに改良されたマシンを用いた作品を初めて発表します。短編ドキュメンタリーとディスカッションを交えたプログラムを通じて、マーティン・リッチズの作品を例に、メディアアート・アーカイビング・技術的媒介の間にある繋がりに光を当てます。

50年以上にわたり、マーティン・リッチズは力学・音・言語の交差点を探求し、複雑な動態的空間インスタレーションを生み出してきました。「ザ・シンギング・マシン」「ザ・トーキング・マシン」「フォー・ヴォイシズ」などの作品は、驚くほどの精度で人間の声や調音を模倣します。彼の装置はまるで自律したプレイヤーのように振る舞い、人間・機械・芸術的自律性の関係を問い直します。

メディアアーティストの菅野創との協働を通じて、両アーティストは新しい技術を用いてリッチズの楽器を保存・発展させる戦略を開発し、現代の実験音楽家や電子音楽家がこれらのマシンを活用できるようにしました。
